How to Fit the Child Car Seat in the Car
There are many types of child restraint systems, from those that have been specifically designed for transporting newborn babies in a horizontal position (pram carrycots), to child car seats with seat and backrest (the most common), to simple pillow-boosters, which allow you to fit the car safety belt at the correct height (in correspondence with the collarbone) and are ideal for older children. All the traditional child car seats are fitted with the safety belt of the car (with the exception of the Isofix child car seat).
Pram carrycotsfor Group 0 – Appropriate transport system for very small babies because they can lie in a horizontal position, which is more suitable during the first months of life. These carrycots must be fitted into the car with specific homologated locking kits, without which the carrycot cannot be used in the car. Similarly, the carrycots of prams that have not been designed for car transportation, cannot be used for this purpose. Picture
Child Car Seats for Group 0+ – Children up to 13 kg using a Group 0+ child car seat must always be transported in a rear-facing position, and the airbag must always be deactivated. Therefore, if the child car seat must be fitted into a car seat equipped with airbag, it is first necessary to deactivate it. If the airbag cannot be deactivated, the child car seat must be fitted into another car seat. Child car seats for Group 0+ have a safety harness for restraining the child. It is recommended to place the carry handle against the backrest of the car seat to maximise the stability of the child car seat. Picture
Child Car Seats for Groups 0+/1 – A child car seat for Groups 0+/1 (from 0 up to 18 kg) should be used as follows: Children from birth up to 9 kg, must be transported in a rear-facing position. Between 9 and 13 kg you can choose whether to fit the child car seat in a rear or forward-facing position, as you or your child may wish. For safety reasons, however, it is advisable to fit the child car seat in a rear-facing position until the child weighs less than 13 kg. Afterwards, the child car seat must be fitted in a forward-facing position. These child car seats have car safety belt guides of a different colour for avoiding any possible assembly mistakes: light blue for Group 0+ and red for Group 1. Picture
Child Car Seats for Group 1 – Children from 9 up 18 kg of weight using a Group 1 child car seat, must be transported in a forward-facing position. Usually, also the child car seats for Group 1 are fitted with a safety harness for restraining the child. Picture
Child Cr Seats for Groups 2-3 – Child car seats for Groups 2-3 are intended for use for children from 15 up 36 kg of weight. They are divided into different categories: child car seats with rigid backrest, boosters or child car seats with removable backrest, that can be used as boosters when the child is older. In all cases, both the child and child car seat are fastened with the safety belts of the car. When the child is 1.50 m in height, it will no longer have to use a child car seat, because the car safety belt normally used with adults can be fitted correctly over its shoulder and not over its neck.
